It
was always going to be tough to live up to Blue Harvest, the Family
Guy spoof of Star Wars Episode IV, and unfortunately this spoof of
The Empire Strikes Back didn't quite do it for me. I like Family Guy
a lot and actually got into it after catching Blue Harvest whilst
flicking channels on the tv, and the rest is history.
Dark Side follows on from Blue Harvest at a fast pace, starting on Hoth. I felt there were, as another reviewer states, a few too many cut-away scenes that seem to be a bit too in-jokey and will appeal to American audiences and not other viewers as they refer to obviously American things, like Juicy Fruit ads. I felt it also lacked a bit of the really sharp observations we saw in Blue Harvest, such as the Death Star guys complaining they don't have a rail etc. Bits that are a success are of course the faithful story-telling of The Empire Strikes Back, which shows the Family Guy team are obviously huge huge Star Wars fans, as I am, and the animation (done by rendering) is a joy to watch. There are a few little observations which I did enjoy, the way characters say their lines which were memorable from the original ("Good. Our first catch of the day.") etc. Overall, this is average at best, and I'm sad to say lost my interest halfway through. It is still worth watching though if you're a fan, and I will of course watch if there is a version of Return of the Jedi. If you liked Blue Harvest, and if you haven't already, watch the Robot Chicken version. The bit with Admiral Ackbar on the quiz show is hilarious.

Guy Presents Blue Harvest [DVD] [2007] was a brilliantly funny
parody of Star Wars IV: A New Hope [DVD] [1977] [Region 1] [NTSC]
and had me laughing practically all the way through. Needless to say
I was excited to hear about McFarlane's next release, Something
Something Something Darkside.
Honestly, the opening credits were the funniest part for me, and the rest was merely season 7 recycled; same gags, same old. The volume of unoriginal content really dampened the laughs from start to finish, leaving me rather disappointed. Moreover, the cut-aways are almost entirely exclusive to American audiences, and make little sense over here in the UK, making me suspect that they're merely compensation for a lack of primary plot material. The crown jewel in the humour department for Blue Harvest had to be the subtle mockery of the original storyline components of A New Hope, and they tried it again this time around, only it wasn't as funny. Plot-wise, Dark Side is fun to follow and made for an enjoyable watch, but I don't think they quite hit the mark in terms of sharp, fast, consistent humour as they did so gloriously in their last offering. As a Family Guy fan I do recommend this DVD as it is good at the core, but don't raise your hopes too high on this one.

Sadly
the best that this DVD has to offer is the faintly pleasing sight of
seeing classic scenes (usually fly-bys for some reason) being
accurately recreated in cartoon form. As much as I found myself
making excuses for it (had some weird internal dialogue going on,
trying to play down the lacklustre script, I guess I wanted to
really like it deep down) there was no avoiding the sense of
disappointment in the end...
Actually I lied, the best that this DVD has to offer is the expectation, the half-pondered what-ifs whilst you wait for it to arrive. Love Family Guy, hooooge Star Wars fan, but I can see this making its way to a charity shop in the not too distant future...

There
has been a recurring problem with Seth' McFarlane's Family Guy since
season 3. The issue is one of heavy receptiveness with the humour
being delivered repeatedly in an even less that subtle way. The
second part of the Star War's parody has got to be one of the best
(and subsequently worst) examples of this. Essentially it's very
lazy writing of samey fart jokes, gay jokes and reappearing gags.
The AT-AT doing nearly a minutes worth of the knee joke that was
stretched out for Peter originally and is now annoying, anything but
funny.
There are some other stereotypical jokes that will provide a smile, or chuckle at best. Meg as the monsters, Neil Goldman as Calrissian, Giant Chicken as Boba Fett. These do not make the situation better though because it's all been done, whether the characters are dressed up as Star War's characters' or not, the joke production stays the same which really bored me. I will admit there is one original scene which I felt was very funny. The Millennium Falcon fleeing the Empire with a Wildest Police videos commentary. That is the only one I can think of though. If you are a die hard Family Guy fan you will already own this but I wish people would not buy this as it would actually send a message that people are getting tired of such laziness. We are to blame for Seth's attitude towards his work because there is no dip or cut-off. If its rubbish it still is purchased. I will not be buying anymore of this parody series myself, I will only catch it if it's on TV because this is not worth my money. Really poor effort. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
